The community gardens (we have 2) bring women together to learn, plant and harvest together, as well as get out of their daily routine for a few hours each week. (As cheerful as these women are, they live under the pressures of maintaining a family in poverty, providing for their children with or without the help of a husband.) We plant traditionally in raised beds but also in hoop houses, greenhouses, and a darkroom (for mushrooms) so the women can learn new gardening techniques. We harvest something almost every week, which means more healthy food in the home and less money spent to feed the family. We now offer a Healthy House and Home program where women can learn to prepare new recipes using food grown in the gardens.
